Book recommendations
Hello friends,
I am looking for some good books to read. Any recommendations?
Also, are there any web sites that are like Netflix style where you can rate books and keep a profile that would make new suggestions? I have only found sites that list similar books to one title.
OK first to the book websites... you can use LibraryThing (www.librarything.com) which will let you keep track of what you read and recommend books. I don't like the interface very well, and I'm not sure how good the recommendations are since I haven't used it in a while. You can check out the recommendations by going onto the catalog for the ACPL. They subscribe to it so when you type in a search and click on a title there will be recommendations at the bottom of the page.
I like Shelfari (www.shelfari.com). It gives you like a book shelf where you can see the covers of all the books you've read and you can see your friends' shelves too. It doesn't give recommendations though but I think you can search for booklists on it. I'd also recommend Novelist. It's an online database that your library probably subscribes to which has great booklists and can do author read-alikes. If your library doesn't subscribe, let me know and I can give you my library card number to use either the one at the Monroe County Public Library or the one here at Multnomah.
If you do decide on Shelfari, let me know. We can be friends on Shelfari... lol.
As for book recommendations.... depends on what you're looking for. I just finished reading a book called "Tender Morsels" which was this book set in fairy tale times about basically come to terms with living in the real world. It's a YA book, but it has some really disturbing things in it like incest and rape. But really I thought it came right out of the fairy tale tradition and had a great plot and message in the end.
Other recommendations: The Road by Cormac McCarthy Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane (all of these are much better than their movies) Lolita by Nabokov
It's actually really hard for me to give adult suggestions because I read a lot of kids books to keep up with the literature.
If you tell me your favorite book or books though I can make a book list for you (actually I'd love to do this for you guys).
I recently read the Indiana Code on child custody proceedings. It was not fabulous. :P Law school doesn't allow for much leisure reading. I try to squeeze in a bit before bed and my eyes start to blur---lately, "The Invention of Solitude" by Paul Auster. He is a phenomenal writer.

Hope that helps.
Much love.
