Portland

So I'm writing you girls to share a little idea.

Kyle and I have been discussing this and, well, I'm pretty sure that we're moving to Portland, OR. We don't have jobs there and we don't have any family there but, well, we both like the idea of living on the west coast, mainly Portland because it's a young progressive sort of town and the cost of living isn't too high. Also there are a number of suburbs around Portland where either of us (hopefully both) will probably be able to find a library job eventually. We realize that to start out we're probably going to get crappy jobs working at Target or in a grocery store or something, but there's public transit and we're both super flexible so it shouldn't be impossible to find someone to hire us.

We're already saving money and looking in to the cheapest way to get there and to live there. We're fairly certain that we have enough money between the two of us to get us out there and enough to pay a reasonable rent for at best 6 months. Plus, he has discussed this with his mom and she has 1) put her full support behind us and 2) said that if things go completely to hell that she will help pay for us to get back to Indiana.

I figure, you're only young once, right? I've never done anything even a little risky and I don't think I'll ever have a chance to do so again. So why not?

Anyway, I guess I just wanted to know your thoughts.

much love,
Court

  1. So I know you are familiar with the blog-o-sphere, therefore I assume you've seen the blog http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.com/ which I think is hilarious because it describes the stereotypes of people like us very well. :) Anyway, Portland made me think of that because I have indeed heard it is the hub of young, progressive, (white) culture. And it's the 2nd most bike-friendly city in America, after Minneapolis. ;)

I think you'd like it there, but it would be far away. :( I mean, I know I'm far away, but that's really far away. I'd miss you lots.

I'm all for adventures, so I'd say go for it. Just make sure you have a good back-up plan, in case it fails. My current experience has made me very pessimistic about the job market. Don't tell them that you have a master's degree if it's not a library-related job you're applying for. (Is that legal, Dport?)

Final note of caution: A social support system is really important and really hard to build. Especially when it doesn't come automatically like through a grad school cohort. Even then it's hard, which I know you've experienced. So be ready for that.

You're only young once. If you're going to make an adventurous escape from Indiana, now is the time to do it. :) Whatever you decide, I'll support you! Love you!!!

  3. p.p.s In re: Alicia's comment about "Stuff White People Like". This web site amuses me. I think they could find a lot of good photos in Portland. http://www.latfh.com/

Please let me know if they come up with a "Look at this f-ing Yuppie". I could be the cover model.

  4. I agree with much of Alicia's comments and I agree, go for it! Do what you want with life. Do be prepared in case things do not work out, as I am very much experiencing right now.
